New Cardrunners Video

Posted in Poker Related, Shameless Self-Promotion on July 15th, 2010 by Damn Ringer

Haha, welcome back to the blog. I have chosen a sparkling glitter gif of a royal flush. Gay?  A little bit but relevant… indeed it is.

The first part of my two part session at 100nl premiered on Cardrunners.com today. And in the 1 and a half footage, I managed to make a royal flush. It was pretty awesome. But aside from that fun, the video is pretty good discusses alot of concepts I think are gonna be vital for any 100nl reg or 50nl reg.

Make sure if you watch it to leave a rating and comments about things you really liked or disliked. That’s the only way I know what to fix in the next videos. Also any questions i’m more than happy to answer.

Onto my July, I have been grinding a ton of 1/2nl after taking basically the first week of july off thanks to a trip to TN. I am up to 20k hands in about a week of play, which is pretty unheard of for me. I have been playing really well, and running pretty average. If july keeps going well, I’ll likely be taking full shots at 2/4 again in August. That said, I seem to always move up and get knocked right back down.

I have also been coaching a ton recently. I did a well for 2p2 and Cardrunners and it seemed to create alot of interest in my coaching services which was a great reward for doing the wells. I am pretty excited to get started with all the new students I picked up. Next week should be a busy one.

That’s basically all the updates I got. I’ll update again by the end of the month.

Just one of those days…

oneofthosedays

The month is coming to a close and I’ve been working in some 2/4nl shots pretty regularly. Its been going very well, and I am very happy with my play the higher stakes. That said, my 200nl play is just lacking while I’ve got a few 2/4 tables open too. It’s weird how that affects your play. I thought this image was pretty hilarious, and a funny way to break even on the day.

Including today, the past 2 days my poker has just been trash.I find my play has been super-robotic and unthoughtful. When that happens, the red line dives and I just get myself into spots that I didn’t have a plan for. Its something that should always be on the lookout for. I didn’t quit fast enough today, I was up about 4 bi’s and finally ended up giving it all back and then 1. Yesterday on the otherhand, I just didn’t have the patience for poker. That’s part of the gig guys. Realizing when you don’t have your A game and hitting the eject switch.

I brought my C game to the tables for the last 2 days and it’s shown. Here’s a few dumpster fire pots I played…

Against a super weak tight player, he was a 20/6/1.2AF. This is a good way to light money on fire. It’s a ch/f on the turn imo.

Another just miserably played hand. This would be fine against a thoughtful player but I don’t think this guy fits the criteria for that. Super standard fold on the flop imo.

“Just in Time” June

Posted in Poker Related on June 26th, 2010 by Damn Ringer

donovan-get-100623-584Alright, some of you are gonna be like “WTF ringer, you are blogging during the USA world cup game”. Yeah, Everytime I get pumped about the world cup and anticipate the games. I get 5 minutes in and i’m like “wow, this is boring”. Not to mention there is a very reasonable chance that as I blog this, nothing of interest will happen in the game. We are down 0-1 atm and looking like we are getting outplayed. So there you have it, my views on soccer. I want to get into it, but quite frankly nothing but passing ever seems to happen. If soccer scores were like 10-8 and people could overcome big deficits, it’d be a much more exciting game. But i suppose that would make it lacrosse and that’s kinda boring too. Don’t get my wrong tho, I love the USA winning I just wish it could happen in a more exciting manner.

I have started cross-posting my blogs into my “featured” cardrunners blog. It seems to be getting more traffic than my website, so I might have to just move there. I cross-posted my “note taking” post and boom like 150 views. We’ll keep this blog here and i’ll just copy everything over for now. Having alot of viewers should motivate me to post more. Those of you reading this blog on CR and like the posts, please feel free to check out 2 years worth of blogs at www.damnringer.com.

I am going to submit a video at 100nl very similar to my one at 50nl in the next week to CR and hopefully they post it up. I am looking at doing some rather innovative videos as well, working with a math guy being one thing. I’m not sure I really want to make those videos my normal though. I think there’s just such a search for practical, useful answers in videos as opposed to drawn out math problems. That said, the best players in the world get there doing alot of those math problems so studying that stuff certainly can’t make me worse.

As predicted in my “Miserable May” post, I was going to have a “Just in time” June. My god, did that happen. I am running the hottest I’ve ever run in poker over a month period. I don’t put alot of stock into Allin-EV just cause its really worth less in the long term and doesn’t actually affect anything as it breaks even in the long term. I know alot of you guys that are running bad right now will disagree, but I’ve been in that spot before way more than this current spot and know how it works. I am running 15 bi’s above EV @ 1/2 this month. Its not that i’m getting it in bad and sucking out, its more I’m getting it in good in 60/40 situations and its holding and I’m winning all the flips. Its a pretty great feeling to run so hot.

We’ll see if I can close out the month strong, and hopefully put in at least another 10k hands. I would like to play 60k hands/mo for the rest of the year and stop being so lazy when it comes to working. Oh well.

That said, its the end of the blog and nothing has happened in this game.

Cardrunner’s Premiere

Posted in Poker Related, Shameless Self-Promotion on June 23rd, 2010 by Damn Ringer

Damnringer-logoMy video premiered on Monday. I’m not gonna lie I was pretty nervous that people would think I played like a total monkey or wouldn’t follow my thoughts. Well to this point, disaster averted. I have been amazed by the awesome reception my video has received. I was expecting a few people to either “disagree” with something I said, or be pissed at something I did in the video. On the contrary, I even received a few PMs informing me how much people enjoyed it. I am pretty overwhelmed with the love shown. I also received a PM with a few possible pointers for making the video and I greatly appreciated that too. So to everyone, thanks and if you have some ideas for a way to improve the next video, please I’m all ears.

I’d like to give a special shoutout to Micah from CR. It might be his job is to make graphics and animations but I was amazed with the job he did for mine on the main page. For those that want to see it, its still on the main CR page. If you read this blog a little late, a screenshot from the animation is the main picture for this post.

One more thing before I get into talking about the next video. I received a PM from a player on one of my tables in the video that is a CR member. He was actually a regular in what was probably the most interesting hand of the video. He sent me the HH from his end. He seemed less than thrilled he got outplayed but I don’t think there was a ton he could do in that spot. That said, hopefully he learned a few trick. Now all I need is the HH from CRxHodd showing me his A9cc and I’ll be a true genius. Here’s the link: http://weaktight.com/2398014 In future videos, I suppose I should be gentle with my explanations of HH’s.

I’m going to start working on my next videos shortly. I’ve had a few recommendations but I think i’m going to focus on the differences between the limits with my own personal touch in a series of videos. Something similar to what Nolan did on DC 2 years back. That was always one of my favorite full ring series when I was struggling and Nolan made it all that much better. Just a few preliminary ideas so we’ll see. Any topic suggestions would be greatly appreciated… I think everything has been done to some extent by someone else. But any ideas that you guys feel you would like to hear me explain would be greatly appreciated. Anyone interested in a leakfinder? Haha I’m sure that will generate comments. Leave them and if you haven’t posted before have no fear, you will get approved for comments.

Not 30 minutes after I post that blog. FTP sends an e-mail confirming my cashout has been approved. Blogging will get action imo.

Where O Where is my cashout approval?

Posted in Life Related, Poker Related, Shameless Self-Promotion on June 19th, 2010 by Damn Ringer

20081228_terror_alert

So not to freak anyone out, but I cashed out for the first time since June 1st 4 days ago. I got the e-mail saying that it was pending approval. It still hasn’t been approved and normally it takes less than 48 hours to get approval for bank wires.

I’m not that worried, but its still a little alarming considering I’ve gotten paid via rakeback and coaching. Both were pretty quickly approved. Seriously though, I’m not freaked. I’d say I’m at code yellow at the moment. And a rare doubleflyish picture that has somewhat funny ramifications.

Onto other things, my june has been a pretty ridiculous month so far. I am running pretty damn well (10 bi’s above EV) but yet still not crushing as hard as I think I should be. I feel like I’m really on top of the 1/2nl games these days as I pretty fear no regs but maybe mamba and ren. Not to mention, I look at the 2/4nl games and they don’t look that tough. I played a session at 2/4nl earlier this month and was shocked how many of the regs have really glaring leaks still. I guess its not too surprising but I just get this idea in my head that all regs at 2/4+ are going to be playing perfect games for the most part since that is the highest you can play full ring consistently. There’s a reason they aren’t playing 10/20nl 6m I suppose.

Back to the month at hand, I’ve already grinded close to 40k hands and I’m feeling really good about the developments in my game over the last 6 months. I have become a reg leak finding machine since the games have gone super-reggy. Hopefully the 10 bi’s, I’m up in EV don’t come crashing down this month. It is nice to run hot for once and I am great appreciative to be on the other end for if only a month.

My first Cardrunners video is set to debut Monday. If you look on the main menu of cardrunners, you will see my video listed as the only thing offered on monday. I feel like the video was pretty good. I played rather agressively and made the point of hammering home how to beat down 50nl (and 100nl) regs. The video is at 50nl but the regs at 100nl have alot of the same leaks I’m pointing out on the video. Hopefully people don’t just see my PTR and think “breakeven nit” and completely discredit the ideas in the video. If you have a membership, check it out and critique or praise it on monday. Whichever is necessary… and don’t bother looking at my PTR plz.

On a different note, I got a big weekend/week of friends. I have about 12 people in town for 2 different weddings in the DC area. Luckily for me, I’m on the outside of the “bubble” and didn’t get invited to either. It’s guys from my fraternity that I was friends with but by no means would call on a daily basis or even a basis for that matter. Either way, my house is the launching pad for people staying here. My buddy, Fuppnasty on FTP, just got here as well. I managed to get myself sick last night, which was lame but luckily I think tonight is gonna be the big party night. Also after everyone leaves on sunday night, I have another visitor coming into town. Mr. AlwaysLimp will be coming down to DC for a few days. I think we are just gonna play golf, poker and drink for the 3-4 days he’s here. It should be a good time, and 200nl gets a break from 2 pretty good regs in the process too. I’ll post an update after the video drops and likely at the end of the month.

Miserable May

Posted in Poker Related on June 1st, 2010 by Damn Ringer

Welp May was one of those months. It was one where I barely made any profit. Thankfully its over and I was in the green somewhat. This graph is a little too forgiving so I included the hand breakdown. As you can see the 2/4 shots were less than successful. I basically made no money this month. Woooo working for a month and having nothing to show for it!

miserablemay

Add about 1k for coaching and + 1k for rakeback.

Thankfully “Just in time” June is here.  Have a good one guys.

Cardrunners dot com

Posted in Shameless Self-Promotion on May 26th, 2010 by Damn Ringer

.Well hello boys and girls… I got alot of really positive feedback from the last post and if you enjoyed that last post, you’ll likely really enjoy this news…

I officially signed on to be a video producer for Cardrunners this week. I will be producing low and micro-stakes full ring videos for them. I’m sure alot of you know that I’ve been doing private coaching through Cardrunners for a few years, and now am very excited to have this opportunity to coach on a larger scale. My first video is going to premiere on Monday, June 21st.

I’ve come such a long way in poker, and I’d say 90% of the progress is thanks to Cardrunners. So i’m gonna use this blog to reminisce about my Cardrunners experience. It starts for me being a very recreational poker player in about 2006. I use to play just drunken sit and gos with the occasional cash game mixed in. I played with several members of my fraternity. I don’t have a clue where I first heard about cardrunners, but I remember with great detail watching that very first demo video on the front page of the site. I watched it with my roommate at the time, Josh. We both watched the 10 minute demo. After we picked our mouthes off the floor, we created a shrine proclaiming that Taylor Caby was the best poker player alive . We realized we had no idea how to really play poker.

At the time the cost of cardrunners I believe was $25/month with a $100 signup fee. That was alot of money for us back in the day. So me and one of my best friends, Steve, decided to split the cost of the account and start learning to play poker. Within 2 months, It was apparent I was going to be the only person using the account since Steve hadn’t signed on nor paid me in the 2 months. I decided to devote myself to one discipline of poker and I chose the one I was best at… Full ring. I started 4-tabling 25nl about that time while watching every video I could get my hands on on Cardrunners.

I slowly learned to 8-table and then to 12-table and then to 16-table. I moved up to 400nl in a matter of a year (the games were softer back then). Those 400nl tables played more like the 100nl tables nowadays. I always had a dream of creating a video that blew someone’s mind like Taylor’s did for me. I always pretended to be a “Cardrunner’s Pro” when I made my little videos for the “member’s contribution” forum on CR. I said I wanted critiques but I didn’t. I wanted to show everyone how far I had come. About 2 years ago, I contacted Cardrunners about wanting to make videos for them. I was put in touch with Brian Townsend and he told me to create a video and send it in. I created a video and it was a total disaster (which of course I didn’t realize at the time). I remember making the main theme of the video “Calling in position with QK and beating pocket pairs”. It was ridiculous. I held my breathe and got the rejection e-mail. I was sad but it only forced me to work harder on my game. I watched that video recently, and my god, was I bad.

I have been active on the Cardrunner’s Full ring thread for over 3 years and would like to think i’ve helped tons of guys get better. I came in with such guys as “AlwaysLimp” and “Using_It”. We always discussed full ring strategy on those forums while helping the lower level guys. I’ve given so much of my time to that community, I’m so happy to finally get a chance to coach on a large stage

As I sent in my QA video (a sample video that CR uses to test if you are CR worthy), I never had a doubt I was going to get the gig. It was so different than that first shot I sent to Townsend. I am finally ready and have finally made my game good enough to have alot to give back.  I am excited about the video premiere whether people love it or hate it. I finally get my wish of 3 years ago.

Lets turn that switch upside down?

Posted in Uncategorized on May 12th, 2010 by Damn Ringer

Second post of the day I know but figured i’d mention this too.

My last two days have been pretty miserable…

runbad

Aside from winning one crucial 3way allin with KK against AA and JJ, KK hasn’t won an allin pre-flop in 5k hands. I get it variance!!! I ran hot in April. Can we just forgive and forget? On the brightside of things, I think its a total miracle I’m winning theoretical money with how badly I’ve been getting coolered these last 2 days. Oh well, its poker after all. The short-term can be nutty. Cheers to the long term!

Note Taking and Thinking Backwards

Posted in Strategy on May 12th, 2010 by Damn Ringer

A rare strategy post from me, but I hope to start doing this more often. Hopefully that makes the blog a little more worth reading. I’m going to talk about something alot of regulars subconsciously know don’t think through fully.

First thing first, I’m a HUGE advocate of taking extensive notes. The most important thing that a micro/low-stakes regular can start doing is taking notes on the regulars in their games. I always tell my new students this and you’d be shocked (or maybe not) how few new students are taking notes at all. Alot of players don’t know how to take notes or even worse, think they know how to take notes and won’t listen. Are you someone who thinks they know how to take notes?

Here’s a few tell-tale signs that you aren’t doing the notes thing right imo:

  • You only take notes on hands that result in a  large pots.
  • You only take notes on hands you lose.
  • You only take notes on hands you are involved in.
  • You don’t include board texture in your notes.
  • You don’t color code different types of opponents.

Be honest with yourself and your note taking. You know you take notes? Only you can hold yourself accountable for your note taking. The hardest one of these for a multi-tabling poker player is absolutely note-taking on small pots you aren’t involved in. The key though is not taking notes on every hand so that you have 15 notes on each player. The key is taking important notes that allow you to do what i call “think backwards” from them so you only need 3 or 4 lines of notes.

The way I can define backwards thinking is best displayed in an example. Lets take a hand between CliffordTheBigRedDog (hero, a good 17/13 reg w/ 5% 3b) and Curious George (villain, we have almost no hands on this villain but he’s 12 tabling).

Curious George opens from middle position and we are on the button with AQss. We decide to take the standard line and 3b for value to 10bb. Curious George flats our 3b out of position. Flop comes down A23 rainbow. Villain checks to us, and we c-bet to 14bb (our standard). Villain quickly folds.

That was crazy standard amirite? We had the best hand and our villain likely was holding onto a hand like 99. No need to take a note on that. Obviously, that’s not true. That hand is exactly the kind of hand that we can take a note on and think it backwards in a later situation. Noting that hand will tell us, this villain’s likely range for flatting 3b’s isn’t Ax hands. But the real point here is this note can be applied on flops that don’t look like that. By noting that hand we realize our villain is likely making a mistake of calling 3b’s with speculative hands or going set minding out of position. So now we can really narrow down the range of not only what hands he’s folding/calling with but also know what kind of hands he’s 4b’ing with.

So just from this hand we realize that its likely curious george is calling 3b’s with pocket pairs or hands like KJs so that begs the question what hands is he going to be 4b’ing? The answer is likely a super-polarized range of nut hands (QQ+, AK) and total air. If we know he’s not 4b’ing hands like 99, all of the sudden hands like 88 start looking more like the nuts to 5b jam.

Oh dear did we just infer our 5b shoving value range from a villain’s flatting 3b range? Obviously, we will need more than this one example to have conclusive evidence of our villain’s range here. But I’d say if we see our new regular do this kind of thing more than 3 times we can start assuming these are real ranges for our villain. We learned that from one standard looking hand.

Here’s what my note on that hand would look like for me:

-flat mp against btn 3b; ch/f Axxr

(each player should create their own shorthand for notes, but feel free to steal mine)

From that one line, after I see that type of hand play out a few times. I can tell what my villain’s likely range is and adjust my own value ranges to cater to this specific new regular’s tendencies.

Thinking backwards is a REALLY important stat in a regular. It allows you to take one hem number/hand and assume a vast number things from it. Most really good regulars do this thinking and don’t even realize they do it, but most breakeven regulars don’t even bother or know its there in their hud or in front of them on the tables.

I’ll talk about one more common situation that backwards thinking is really useful.

In this hand, we are playing against a SenseiChen (a regular we have several hundred hands on). He’s a 1ptbb winner and overall plays a pretty decent game. He’s got a high c-bet % but a rather low turn c-bet %.

Villain opens from early position. We have JJ in the cutoff and flat. Everyone else folds. Flop comes down 932. Villain bets and we decide to call. Turn comes an offsuit ten. Villain checks (like we expect him to with all non-value hands) and we decide to bet. Villain calls us quickly. River comes an offsuit K. Villain quickly checks to us again, and we decide to go to showdown thinking there’s not much value in betting and there’s a chance we could have gotten beat on the river. To our surprise, the villain flips over AA and takes the pot down.

Now this hand is another hand we should take a note on for sure. This note will tell us that our villain loves to pot control his medium-strong hands (a trait of many weak regulars). This is an awesome note to have in itself because if we happen to flop a set here, we know to just fire in big barrels on the turn and river against this kind of opponent. Even doing things like overbetting with sets, will pay big dividends with a note like this due to him feeling as though he underrepped his hand. And after a while we can start taking away pots at our will because he will relate the overbets to a flopped set.

The backwards thinking here is when we see our villain double or triple barrel here in the future. What could it mean when he bets twice or three times? He doesn’t bet AA on this board what in the world is he betting with? We can now use this note to think the opposite when he does the opposite. We can remove hands like QQ-AA from his turn betting range and now if you think right, his range is really only hands he is going to fold to a raise or has a set. And as durrr says, “its hard to flop a set”.

That note would look like this:

-opened AA ep; c-bet 9xx rainbow; ch/c Tx; ch’d K

There’s a million different things you can figure out from your opponents game, but spotting these kinds of glaring leaks just become second nature after you practice thinking about what each hand really means for the villain’s range and style. I recommend taking a look through your database at standard hands and say to yourself “This means this range, but what isn’t in that range? and what would he do with that?”. Also remember, players are adjusting to you and your play. So always keep in mind, what the notes your opponents are taking on you and what things they are inferring.

Good luck at the tables, and hopefully you guys enjoyed my attempt at a thoughtful strategy post. Please comment if you’d like more.
